Pros & Cons of Playa El Almejal

Pros

  • Beautiful, pristine beach
  • Small town with a friendly atmosphere
  • No crowds or noise pollution in the evenings

Cons:

  • The water is not clear enough for snorkeling. There’s a lot of seaweed and floating debris, which can be quite unpleasant when you’re swimming. This isn’t really a con if you’re into snorkeling, but it’s worth mentioning that there is no coral or fish life to see here (unless you like floating plastic bags).

There are a lot of turtles on this beach.

It’s surprising that there are so many turtles on this beach. To protect them from being over-hunted by humans, they’re now a protected species by law. This means it can be illegal for you to disturb them in any way (like taking their picture). In fact, if you see one sunning itself on the beach and decide to get closer for some photos you could be fined up to $300 USD!

This is why Playa El Almejal is such an amazing place for turtle watching: since they’re not disturbed by humans often, there will be turtles visible from the beach at all times of day and year.
