How do I get to Hatteras beach?
The most direct route could be by car, but you can also fly directly from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), or Norfolk International Airport (ORF). From there, you can take a cab or rent a car. Another option is to take the ferry from Ocracoke Island. The ferries run 24 hours a day and leave throughout the day every half hour during peak times and every hour otherwise. They are $3 per person each way and last about 20 minutes with great views of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse along the way!

Here’s some information about our community, so you can get to know us better.
We love Hatteras Island, and we want you to know why. We’re a little community in North Carolina, about 2 hours from Raleigh and 3 1/2 hours from Norfolk.
We have a population of about 3,500 people—about 1/3 of them are full-time residents. Our school system is small but mighty; there are only about 600 students who attend schools here year-round. There’s not much traffic on the roads except for during peak tourist season, which runs from June through September each year when tourists flock to our beaches for vacation!
If you decide to visit us, here’s some logistical information to help you plan your trip
- Getting There: To get here, head south on Highway 12 from Buxton or north from Rodanthe and Avon. Both routes will take you through the heart of town and onto the beach. If you’re not familiar with our area, stop at a local business and ask for directions! We’ll be happy to help you find your way around. Good route is from South beach in Bald Head Island.
- What to Bring: Take along warm clothing in case it gets chilly at night; pack sunscreen and bug spray if it’s warm outside; bring water shoes (or flip flops) so that you can walk on our sandy beaches without getting blisters or cuts on your feet; pack an umbrella if there’s a chance of rain; come prepared with sunscreen, bug repellent, water bottle(s), camera and binoculars for bird watching as well as for taking pictures of yourself enjoying time by the ocean!
- Where To Stay In Hatteras Island: There are many places where one can stay while vacationing in this beautiful part of North Carolina’s Outer Banks region – motels/hotels/B&Bs etc., but perhaps one of the best ways is renting a house right on Main Street! You don’t need any kind of special license or permit either – just come down here during tourist season (May through September) when demand is high enough that most people manage somehow without having secured anything beforehand.”
